This discussion focuses on managing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for effective use. Consistent themes will be highlighted across the varied array of artificial intelligence types.  These themes include uncertainty analysis, augmenting or replacing human expertise, and evaluating the use of AI to apply established statistical methods versus developing less explainable models (e.g., neural networks). Data quality and completeness are often deciding factors in application of AI. 

The continued evolution of AI will necessitate continued exploration to keep up with the potential uses. Continued learning isn’t new rather it is consistent with practices like journal article review, conference attendance, and other professional discussions that help maintain technical proficiency in related topics such as environmental remediation, hydrogeology, biodegradation, and digital technology. During this evolution, finding the best practices will likely help direct exploration versus application. Discussion of best practices will consider when to document the use of AI, associated uncertainty related to results, digital security related to the data and AI tools, and understanding the boundary conditions.

    • Overview of recent NPDES PFAS projects, description of MassDEP’s NPDES and Residuals program PFAS lab guidance, and a walk-through of the wastewater and residuals PFAS data available through the public portal.
  • NY: How working groups actually work!  Progress in identifying and mitigating PFAS sources and transport pathways across multiple Divisions in a State Agency.

The workshop will conclude with an open Panel Discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences.

Camp Edwards at Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC) has hosted military training for over a century including operating numerous Small Arms Ranges (SARs) featuring firing lines and impact berms to capture fired bullets. Contaminants of concern associated with these areas include lead, copper, and antimony from projectiles and propellants. These ranges sit above a sole-source aquifer where precipitation can transport contaminants through the area’s highly permeable sand to the groundwater table.

In 1997, an EPA order resulted in a ban on the use of lead bullets at Camp Edwards. Subsequent investigations and remedial actions included excavation of lead-impacted berms, screening and removal of bullet fragments, and application of MAECTITE® chemical process to immobilize heavy metals, allowing for on-site soil re-use.

Strict Best Management Practices (BMPs) were established to allow the safe reintroduction of lead bullets and copper bullets at four currently active SARs. These BMPs feature engineered bullet-containment systems, routine metals recovery, and ongoing soil, porewater, and groundwater monitoring.

For the past 30 years, the Army National Guard has invested millions of dollars in robust data collection and remediation at Camp Edwards. Numerous studies demonstrate that, under natural conditions, the local soil significantly slows the migration of metals of concern, including lead, copper, and antimony. Data from soil samples, laboratory column studies, and fate/transport modeling indicate that lead, copper and antimony are strongly adsorbed by subsurface soils. Recent modeling predicts that absent BMPs, it would take more than a century for lead to reach groundwater.

A case study will be presented for Sierra Range, an active SAR, to demonstrate how ongoing monitoring and BMP maintenance ensure no fixed source of metals remains. These protective measures allow for the continued operation of all active SARs while safeguarding the underlying aquifer and ensuring compatible military training.

This workshop provides an in-depth, hands-on exploration of advanced statistical methods for calculating exposure point concentrations (EPCs) and making comparisons to background.  The U.S. EPA’s ProUCL software will be the primary featured tool. The course is designed for environmental professionals, risk assessors, and technical managers looking to build skills and experience in practical applications of ProUCL for risk assessment and site decision-making. These are considered advanced topics building on prior ProUCL workshops offered by AEHS and the LSPA that focused on standard approaches to estimating EPCs using ProUCL.

To provide context, past course content will be reviewed briefly for the benefit of those who have not attended previous courses, including a discussion of methods to estimate EPCs from judgmental and systematic sampling data.  An example of area-weighted averaging using a Thiessen polygon approach will be included.  Limited statistical theory will also be presented to provide insights on these data analysis methods.

The instruction will also include approaches to assess site data against background data sets, such as background threshold values and two-sample comparisons. A theme throughout will be highlighting statistical and conceptual site model assumptions, including understanding how outlier treatment and data distribution assumptions influence the calculated statistics.

Participants are required to bring laptops with ProUCL installed, as the workshop will include working through example datasets to develop proficiency in executing analyses and interpreting the resulting statistical outputs.
